Root Canal Therapy in Birmingham, AL

Root canal therapy is a common dental treatment used to relieve pain and eliminate infection in a tooth with damaged or infected pulp. It helps preserve the natural tooth and prevent the need for extraction, allowing patients to maintain proper function and appearance. At Cornerstone Endodontics, Dr. John Collier offers root canal therapy to help restore oral health and comfort with compassionate, expert care. Many patients find that root canal treatment provides lasting relief and helps them return to normal eating and speaking with confidence. To learn more, contact our Birmingham, AL office to schedule a consultation.

A root canal is performed by first numbing the affected area with local anesthesia to ensure the patient remains comfortable throughout the procedure. Dr. Collier then carefully creates a small opening in the tooth to access the infected or damaged pulp tissue. The infected tissue is removed, and the inside of the tooth is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. Once cleaned, the root canals are filled and sealed to prevent further infection, and a temporary or permanent restoration is placed to protect the tooth. The procedure is typically completed in one to two visits and is designed to relieve pain while preserving the natural tooth.

What Can I Expect After Root Canal Therapy?

After your root canal procedure, it is normal to experience some mild soreness or sensitivity in the treated area for a few days. This discomfort can typically be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers as recommended by Dr. Collier. You should avoid chewing on the treated tooth until a permanent restoration, such as a dental crown, has been placed to fully protect and strengthen it. Most patients are able to return to their normal daily activities the following day. Dr. Collier and our team will provide detailed aftercare instructions and schedule any necessary follow-up visits to ensure proper healing and the long-term success of your treatment.

Dr. Collier and the entire team were absolutely wonderful! From the moment I scheduled my appointment to the time I checked out after my procedure, everyone was incredibly kind, welcoming, and professional.Megan and Cat, the assistants during my visit, were exceptional. They checked on me throughout the appointment, made sure I was comfortable, and even gave me gentle, reassuring taps during the numbing process, which helped calm my nerves. Dr. Collier was so gentle when administering the anesthetic that it was completely painless. This was my very first root canal, and I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better experience. The team made what I expected to be a stressful procedure feel easy and comfortable. I was offered a cozy blanket, got to watch a TV show of my choice, and they took the time to explain each step of the process, which really helped put me at ease.I highly recommend Dr. Collier and the entire staff. Their compassion, professionalism, and attention to patient comfort truly set them apart!

If you have anxiety, this is an awesome office. I am someone who has a hard time with coming into the dentist to begin with, so having to come here for a root canal was already stressful. The office staff is kind and supportive. The doctor is amazing and so gentle. Constantly checking in to make sure you're ok. They don't make you feel weird at all for asking for the nitrous gas. All around lovely people, if this was a traditional dentist office I would happily make the one hour drive for routine cleaning/maintenance.

Dr. Collier and Sarah made my whole procedure comfortable and painless. Even after the numbness wore off, I experienced very slight discomfort that night! I never thought I would say “my root canal was great!” I highly recommend Cornerstone and if I have to have another procedure like this one, I will definitely go there!

During your visit, our team will use digital X-rays and a comprehensive exam to determine if a root canal treatment or endodontic therapy is needed to relieve tooth pain and protect your dental health. Common signs that you may need a root canal procedure include persistent toothache, tooth pain when chewing, sensitivity to hot and cold, swollen gums, a pimple-like bump near the gumline, or tooth discoloration after injury. Seeking care for a possible tooth infection early can help save your natural tooth and restore comfort.
