What Is Root Canal Therapy?
Root canal therapy is a common dental treatment used to relieve pain and eliminate infection in a tooth with damaged or infected pulp. It helps preserve the natural tooth and prevent the need for extraction, allowing patients to maintain proper function and appearance. At Cornerstone Endodontics, Dr. John Collier offers root canal therapy to help restore oral health and comfort with compassionate, expert care. Many patients find that root canal treatment provides lasting relief and helps them return to normal eating and speaking with confidence. To learn more, contact our Birmingham, AL office to schedule a consultation.
How Is A Root Canal Performed?
A root canal is performed by first numbing the affected area with local anesthesia to ensure the patient remains comfortable throughout the procedure. Dr. Collier then carefully creates a small opening in the tooth to access the infected or damaged pulp tissue. The infected tissue is removed, and the inside of the tooth is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. Once cleaned, the root canals are filled and sealed to prevent further infection, and a temporary or permanent restoration is placed to protect the tooth. The procedure is typically completed in one to two visits and is designed to relieve pain while preserving the natural tooth.
What Can I Expect After Root Canal Therapy?
After your root canal procedure, it is normal to experience some mild soreness or sensitivity in the treated area for a few days. This discomfort can typically be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers as recommended by Dr. Collier. You should avoid chewing on the treated tooth until a permanent restoration, such as a dental crown, has been placed to fully protect and strengthen it. Most patients are able to return to their normal daily activities the following day. Dr. Collier and our team will provide detailed aftercare instructions and schedule any necessary follow-up visits to ensure proper healing and the long-term success of your treatment.

Root Canal Therapy Reviews
Dr. Collier and his staff are wonderful at making their patients feel at ease and comfortable throughout the entire procedure. I’ve had root canals many years ago with different doctors and neither time did I have a good experience. But this time I’ve had very minimal discomfort when the numbing wore off and since then no pain whatsoever. I would highly recommend Cornerstone Endodontics!
My daughter had a wonderful ☺️ experience at this facility. Dr. Collier was super sweet and put her at ease all throughout her root canal. He was very professional and handled her with care. His office staff was great. They were very nice and personable. I would definitely recommend this office to family and friends.
When I came here to leave a review, I was not shocked to see 1,400+ 5-star reviews. Every interaction with their team, prior to, and at my visit, was fantastic. I am a CEO coach/mentor and I pay attention to what businesses do to deliver an amazing experience. Cornerstone does it right, everytime. My regular dentist, Dr. Biancalana at New Beginnings in Prattville, said they were great. Their reputation holds true to that.Making an appointment was seamless. They called me just prior to my appointment to remind me, go over my expected cost and insurance, and answer any additional questions. When I arrived for my appointment, their excellent service continued. Every member of the staff was professional and welcoming. Paperwork was easy to complete. They even gave me a card, like a menu, asking me about my preferences in the procedure room. Did I want a pillow, a blanket, headphones for my cell phone, what channel did I want the TV on, what did I want to drink, did I want laughing gas, what was my anxiety, my pain, etc. They were genuinely interested in making me comfortable. I was blown away by this level of service. The equipment they use is high-tech and it makes you feel very comfortable in the level of expertise they have. During my procedure, they continually asked me if I was doing good and if I needed anything.I chose not to get nitrous gas and my procedure was perfect and virtually painless. Dr. Collier and his assistant exceeded my expectations throughout the root canal. There is not a single thing that I would recommend they do differently. If I could give more than 5 stars, I would.Well done Dr. Collier and team. You are my endodontist for life!
Very pleased with my first experience at Cornerstone Endodontics with Dr. Collier for a root canal. Highly recommend if you are in need of an endodontic😊
Easily the best experience with a root canal I have ever had.Extremely thorough and with the upmost consideration of my comfort.Dr. Collier is a pro and Madison made sure everything was well explained and that everything went off without a hitch during the root canal.I wouldn’t say I’m excited to come back but if the need arises I know this is first place I will be calling.

Am I A Candidate for Root Canal Therapy?
Inflamed tooth pulp is often caused by severe tooth decay, a cracked tooth, or dental trauma. During your visit, our team will use digital X-rays and a comprehensive exam to determine if a root canal treatment or endodontic therapy is needed to relieve tooth pain and protect your dental health. Common signs that you may need a root canal procedure include persistent toothache, tooth pain when chewing, sensitivity to hot and cold, swollen gums, a pimple-like bump near the gumline, or tooth discoloration after injury. Seeking care for a possible tooth infection early can help save your natural tooth and restore comfort.
Does Insurance Cover Root Canal Therapy?
Many dental insurance plans cover root canal therapy, as it is considered a medically necessary procedure. Coverage amounts vary depending on your specific plan, so we recommend contacting your insurance provider to confirm your benefits before your appointment. Our team at Cornerstone Endodontics is happy to help you navigate your insurance coverage and answer any questions you may have. Please contact our Birmingham, AL office and we will do our best to make your treatment as affordable as possible.
